What It Is Scaling and Polishing
Scaling
Removal of plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) from teeth surfaces, including under the gums.
Polishing
Smoothing the teeth surface to remove minor stains and make it harder for plaque to stick.
Purpose
- Prevent gum disease (gingivitis, periodontitis)
- Remove tartar buildup that brushing can’t remove
- Reduce bad breath
- Maintain oral hygiene and prevent cavities
Procedure
- Dentist or hygienist uses ultrasonic scaler or hand instruments to remove plaque/tartar.
- Polishing with a rotating brush and gritty toothpaste to smooth teeth surfaces.
- Usually takes 30–60 minutes depending on buildup.
Frequency
- Every 6 months for most people
- More frequent (3–4 months) if prone to gum disease or heavy tartar
Aftercare
- Mild sensitivity may occur for 1–2 days
- Brush and floss as usual
- Avoid staining foods (coffee, tea, tobacco) for 24–48 hours if possible
Teeth Whitening
- Cosmetic procedure to lighten the color of teeth.
- Can remove extrinsic stains (surface) and sometimes intrinsic stains (inside teeth).
Types of Whitening
- In-office whitening
- Professional bleaching with higher-concentration gel
- Works quickly, usually 1–2 hours
- Immediate results
- At-home whitening (custom trays)
- Dentist provides a tray + whitening gel
- Worn for a few hours daily for 1–2 weeks
- Gradual results
- Over-the-counter products
- Whitening strips, toothpaste, or gels
- Mild results, slower than professional methods
Effectiveness
- Depends on type of stains:
- Yellow stains respond best
- Gray stains or tetracycline stains may need stronger treatments
Precautions
- Teeth and gums may feel sensitive temporarily
- Avoid very hot/cold foods for a few days
- Not recommended if you have active cavities or gum disease until treated
